Offering weekly camps targeting handwriting, social-emotional and executive functioning skills. Additionally, I offer a limited amount of occupational therapy evaluations/sessions that take place within the home and community settings.
My mission is to foster the ultimate creative and imaginative play experience while children learn a variety of skills that encourage participation and independence within their daily living skills, school skills, and social-emotional skills. Play opportunities (especially outdoor and free play) continue to decline. There is growing evidence it is impacting children in a variety of ways throughout their day.
In my history as an occupational therapist I have been drawn to groups as I have seen several benefits that is why I am offering weekly camp groups for three different areas of development (handwriting, social-emotional regulation, and executive functioning skills in relation to school readiness). When pairing children in groups they receive a social interaction component, learning to work as a team, and teaching each other new skills.
Participating in imaginative play helps children learn a wide array of skills including play schemes, problem-solving, gross motor and fine motor skills, social and emotional development.
I regularly hear from parents and school officials that children are being exposed to technology at earlier ages than in previous generations and that screen time has been prioritized over imaginative play.
Research continues to show the benefits of imaginative play and how crucial it is to let a child learn through play within natural environments. Through free play children learn intrinsic motivation (what gives them joy), learn how to make friends and experience a variety of emotions, and learn important life skills.
Can you imagine yourself zooming into space on your bike or playing dress-up pretending to be your favorite role model? Did you have fun drawing with chalk on sidewalks? Maybe you loved to play outdoor games with neighborhood kids learning how to coordinate your body with hopscotch, jump rope, tag or did you enjoy being a part of a community through team sports?
Consider how those play experiences have shaped you as an adult. These are all powerful interactions and experiences that can help build and shape healthy communication skills and positive attitudes for young kids.
